Leatherface - “Not Superstitious” from Mush
I have a tendency to gravitate toward the most sentimental sounding tracks on a record. It’s something that I’ve always done and continue to do unconsciously. A good example of this is the first Propagandhi LP. I was just getting into punk rock and that record is full of humorous political rippers that satiated my teenage aggression, but my favorite part on the whole album was John K. Samson’s wimpy verse on “Showdown” (which coincidentally doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the rest of the song). It’s no wonder I got heavily into overly dramatic emo records and sappy indie-pop.
Though Mush is not as outwardly aggressive as How to Clean Everything and offers a bit more variation in the way of a quiet/loud dynamic, I still lean toward the more lyrically sentimental midsection of the record - “Not a Day Goes By/Not Superstitious/Springtime.” On any given day, any of these could be my favorite song on the record. It’s been extremely cold the past few days and I think my SAD is acting up and “Not Superstitious” has been satisfying my interest in listening to emotional, easy on the ears melodic punk.
