Descendents - “Kabuki Girl” from Milo Goes to College
I wanted to like Descendents before I had even heard them. I don’t know why. Maybe it was the logo, maybe it was just hearing their name around all the time, but when I saw an ad in Thrasher about a forthcoming Descendents LP (Everything Sucks) I was excited. I was a freshman in high school when that record came out and my mom gave me the CD for my birthday. Later that spring they were playing at the Congress Theater with Tuesday, Less than Jake, Handsome and a few others and I was determined to go even though I couldn’t drive yet. I lucked out because our friend Mikey was a senior and had a car. We had a half day from school so we left straight from there yet still missed most of Tuesday because the show started early and traffic was absolutely horrible. Descendents were great though and managed to sound good despite the terrible venue.
Everything Sucks was the first Descendents record I got into, but Milo Goes to College is my favorite. How could it not be? Every song is great and even this song, which I once found to just be kind of a b-side, has become one of my favorites. I think watching Forward to Death cover it at Chicago Fest a few years ago really shed some new light on it for me. I keep hearing rumors of Descendents playing Riot Fest this year. I’d love to see them again, but not at Warped Tour Jr.
