The Stone Roses - “Love Spreads” from Second Coming
My friend and recent home buyer T. Smith and I were discussing The Stone Roses on our way home from work the other night and I started thinking about how universally panned Second Coming seems to be.It’s not as bad as people make it out to be though, especially when you consider what a tough act their first record probably was to follow. The band itself kind of blew it. They had a huge record, were headlining huge UK festivals, then they dropped off the map for several years to make a record that is way more psych and blues influenced than the madchester/baggy sound of their s/t LP. They waited too long and bands like Blue and Oasis capitalized on the void that was left.
This song is a pretty undeniable ripper though. I’d stay up all night watching MTV in the summer and I couldn’t get enough of this band, which is probably why I have more of a soft spot for Second Coming than most. I thought The Stone Roses were so weird and cool and that teenage interest continued well into adulthood. In my late teens/early 20’s I really wanted my hair to look like Ian Brown’s and adopted several looks similar to it. A few years ago I tried to go for this one but cut my hair because I ended up looking like this. It wasn’t a great look for me. Ian Brown still looks great though.
