Donnie & Joe Emerson - “Baby” from Dreamin’ Wild
On looks alone, one would be reasonable to assume this was the epitome of a dollar bin record, more useful as a kitschy bowl than something you’d actually listen to. However, if you look past the truly disgusting cover art that resembles something taken at Sears’ portrait studio and listen to how good this song is, the rocker poses and jumpsuits should be easy to ignore.
On “Baby” the Emerson’s perfectly execute a truly soulful tune ideal for this rainy morning. It’s a bit more subdued than much of Dreamin’ Wild, which isn’t saying much because the record as a whole never gets too raucous, but it’s a great soul track and the crowning jewel on an excellent LP. Finding out about records like this make me wonder how many other gems are lurking out there in thift stores and cut-out bins all over the world because as deceptive as this one.
